Three ways to take a Serengeti safari
Most Serengeti safaris combine three choices that are easy to mix up. The first is how you travel: in a shared vehicle with other guests (a group or joining safari) or in a vehicle and with a guide just for your party (a private safari). The second is where you sleep: camping or a lodge. The third is how you arrive: by road from Arusha or by a scheduled flight to an airstrip (a fly-in safari).
Offers overlap. A group trip can be camping or lodge based, and a private trip can be by road or by air. When you compare prices, compare all three choices, not just the headline number. The figures below are single examples from 2026, not a market range.

Group, private and fly-in compared
Package prices per person in US dollars, as listed in 2026. They change with season and group size.
| Type | How it works | Example | Price per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group (joining) | Shared vehicle and guide, fixed route from and to Arusha, camping or lodge | 4 days, 3 nights, Northern Circuit | $800 to $1,390 |
| Private by road | Vehicle and guide only for your party, midrange lodging | 4 days, 6 or 2 travelers | $1,350 to $1,795 |
| Private fly-in | Scheduled flights, airstrip transfers and private game drives, lodging confirmed in the quote | 4 days, 3 nights, from Zanzibar, 6 or 2 travelers | $1,995 to $2,495 |
In the private examples the price per person falls as the group grows, because the vehicle cost is shared by more people. The cheaper figure belongs to the larger group. See the cost page for what moves a price.

What four days really means
The headline length is not the time you spend in the park.
A typical group route starts in Arusha, passes Tarangire and Karatu, climbs through the Ngorongoro Highlands into the central Serengeti, visits Ngorongoro and returns to Arusha. Four days on that route do not mean four days in the Serengeti. Travel days take a large share, and the park itself may get only part of the trip. Ask for the day-by-day plan and count the nights you sleep inside the Serengeti.
The group example lists a central Serengeti overnight at Nyani Campsite. Camping and lodge versions of the same route exist, so check which one the price refers to. The crater and its highland rim belong to a different protected area. For that part of the route, read the guide to the Ngorongoro Crater.
Group safari: what is usually included
A shared vehicle and guide, route fees, the crater service fee, the meals listed in the program and drinking water. Camping versions add tents and a cook. Flights, visa, insurance, tips and any hotel before or after the safari are not included, and an airport transfer only by agreement.
Private safari: what is usually included
A vehicle and guide for your party only, the park and conservation fees named in the offer, confirmed lodging and meals. The same route can be quoted for two travelers or six, with a different price per person.
Fly-in safari: what is usually included
Scheduled flights between Zanzibar and the Serengeti, private game drives, park fees, lodging, the meals listed and airstrip transfers. Season, flights and lodging can change the final price, so rely on the dated quote.
Safari from Zanzibar โActivities in the park
Game drives are the core. Other options need planning.
The park authority lists game drives, balloon flights and guided walks. Some special activities need extra permits and advance booking, so an activity named in a general description is not automatically open to everyone on the day. Ask your operator which activities are part of your price and which are extras.
Balloon flights are the best known extra. A shared flight is listed at $599 per person in 2026, with park entry not included. The balloon safari page covers launch regions and season. For animals and where to look for them, see the wildlife page.

Serengeti safari: frequently asked questions
Is a group or a private safari better?
It depends on budget and flexibility. A group safari shares the vehicle and follows a fixed route, which lowers the price per person. A private safari uses a vehicle and guide only for your party, and the price per person depends on group size.
Does a four-day safari give me four days in the Serengeti?
No. On the usual route from Arusha, the days include travel through Tarangire, Karatu and the Ngorongoro Highlands. Ask for the day-by-day plan and count the nights inside the park.
Is the park entry fee included in the price?
That depends on the offer. The examples above name park or conservation fees as part of the package, but this is not true of every offer. Ask in writing what the price covers. See park fees.
Can I go on a walking safari or a balloon flight?
The park authority lists guided walks and balloon flights. Special activities can need extra permits and advance booking, so ask your operator before you plan around them.
When is the best season for a safari?
That depends on what you want to see. The south is the focus from January to March and the north from July to October. See best time to visit.
